A Collector's Must Read for Insights into Collecting and Understanding Southeast Asian Art Now!
By Seng Yu Jin
30 Art Friends 2 is a project of passion in collecting art from Southeast Asia. The earlier edition of 30 Art Friends focued on collectors in Singapore and Malaysia. Not surprisingly, T.K. Quek, the editor and initiative of both book projects have expanded the scope of this book project to include collectors from Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. What has also changed is the format of this second edition that involve having collectors to share their own personal stories into their collecting strategies, their interpretation of artworks in their collection and how they started collecting. These narratives into the impulses for collecting art from this region will be important for scholars, curators, artists and collectors to understand. Artists whose works have been selected to be featured in this book have also shared their thoughts into their own artworks. Artistic intention has always been held as an important entry point to understand an artwork, although not the only one. These art historically significant nuggets of information will provide a much needed primary source for researchers. This handsomely put together book filled with well illustrated artworks will set the standard for other art books on the region to follow. This book also comes withforewords by the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, and the President of the Republic of the Philippines, Benigno S. Aquino III.

Excellent 2nd volume
By Ming
This second volume picks up on the momentum of the first book also published by TK Quek, but offers a more engaging timbre and tone – from the playful design to eloquent inputs, this volume will probably come across as more amenable.
The publisher’s project of mobilising collectors and persuading them to share their acquisitions of Southeast Asian art will undoubtedly trigger the interest of dealers wanting to identify potential clientele as well as appeal to the general art lovers’ curiosity and voyeuristic impulses of finding out “who has what”.
But there are other insights and implications that crucial for those serious about understanding the landscape of art collecting in this part of the world. As with the first volume, you would be missing the point if you are looking for a rigorously curated ‘museum selection’ or hunting for hot tips on blue-chip artists being collected.
There are shining gems in both volumes of 30 ArtFriends, but the strength of this project really lies in its unpacking and opening up of the processes of collecting – processes that can be highly unorthodox at one end of the spectrum and highly disciplined and thought-through at the other end.
Some may note an uneven-ness in the strength of the selections - the collectors are not homogenous in their resources, their strategies or capacity to articulate. Some works were included less because they were the ‘best of’ a collection but because of the story they tell and their significance in the collector’s own journey.
There are some prosaic ramblings in both volumes but also enlightening and wonderful sharing that makes these two books a treasure trove of direct-source material. There is the excitement and adrenaline of significant ‘finds’ or interesting and amusing market revelations, such as those by Paulino Que, who shares the difference between buying art works from owners and buying from dealers.
Bearing in mind that museums tend to shy away from putting the spotlight on collectors, the publisher (who started this project from his own fervour for art), fills in some of these gaps – directing our attention to the complexities of consuming, receiving and re-interpreting an art work as the owner of the piece. It is a book that should be on the art-lover's checklist.

recommended reading for SE Asian art collectors
By AL
From the rudimentary art student to the veteran collector of paintings and sculptures, all can glean something of value from the beautiful tome by Tse Kwang Quek, 30 Art Friends: Collecting Southeast Asian Art. A unique publication in the world of catalogues, it goes beyond assembling pretty pictures on the page, and offers a rare insight of the psyche of collectors from Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The editor's vast knowledge of the Southeast Asian art scene is evident through the way he has thoughtfully collated and coordinated the chronicling of this valuable information for the benefit of both current connoisseurs as well as future generations of arts lovers. This handsome book should rightly take pride of place in any bibliophile's library.
