To reduce these disadvantages, polymers have been utilized as an additive. Polymer-modified or polymer cement mortar (PCM) and concrete (PCC) are the materials which are made by partially replacing the cement hydrate binders of conventional cement mortar or concrete, with polymers. This book deals with the principles of polymer modification for cement composites, the process technology, properties and applications of the polymer-modified mortar and concrete, and special polymer-modified systems such as M DF cement, antiwashout underwater concrete, polymer-ferrocement, and artificial I wood. The polymeric admixtures or cement modifiers include latexes or emulsions, redispersible polymer powders, water-soluble polymers, liquid resins and monomers. This book describes the current knowledge and information of polymer-modified mortars and concretes, and discusses or reviews the following items in detail: 1. Principles of polymer modification for cement composites. 2. Process technology of polymer-modified mortars and concretes. 3. Properties of polymer-modified mortars and concretes. 4. Polymer-modified or polymer cement mortar (PCM) and concrete (PCC) are materials which deal with concrete-polymer composites. They are made by partially replacing the cement hydrate binders of conventional cement mortar or concrete with polymers, i.e., polymeric admixtures or cement modifiers, and by strengthening the binders with the polymers. The polymeric admixtures or cement modifiers include latexes, emulsified polymers, redispersible polymer powders, water-soluble polymers, liquid resins, and monomers. The composite concrete and mortars are currently used as popular construction materials.

About the Author

Yoshihiko Ohama is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Architecture, in the College of Engineering, Nihon University, Koriyama, Japan. After graduating from Yamaguchi University, he received his doctorate from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Tokyo, Japan. Since then, his main interest has been in the research and development of polymer- modified concrete and mortars. He has won awards for his research from the Society of Materials, Japan, and the Japan Society for Finishing Technology. He is also a recipient of a Russian Academy of Engineering honorary diploma. He is vice president, Intemational Congress of Polymers in Concrete, and is a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the International Union of Testing and Research Laboratories for Materials and Structure. An author, or co-author, of seven books, Professor Ohama is also on the editorial board of the International Journal of Cement Composites and Lightweight Concrete: Cement and Concrete Composites; Materials Engineering; and Construction and Building Materials.
