To be loved by a vampire... I've been called many names in my day. Most of them weren't flattering but they were true. I was a right unholy bastard. Eighteen months ago, I was a fat, nasty, legally blind, computer programmer who decided to try his chubby hand at industrial espionage. I wasn't good at it. I caught the attention of a Vampire Assassin, Marcus. He was just supposed to kill me; but he wanted me instead. I became his toy for a year. During which time he reshaped my body; fixed my vision and broke me psychologically into three pieces. On the anniversary of my kidnapping, he gave me the choice to become an equal or remain a toy. Little did we know that he would never be my equal. It turns out that I was the last of the lost Blue Bloodline of the Royal House. A genetic hybrid hidden within the human race -- Xavier Von Drachenfeld, Lord Emperor of the Vampire Nation. Then we start to find out why there are no Blue bloods left in the Vampire world.

Enslaved and Re-made... And that's just the beginning...
By April
I've been binge-reading these days, so it takes something extra to really make an impression. I adored this book!
This is m/m with yaoi roots so expect it to be larger than life with lots of fantasy. Edward is a bitter, nearly blind, over-weight, under-socialized, programmer who attempts to cross the wrong people by doing a bit of industrial espionage on his employer. In a flash, he finds himself kidnapped and enslaved by an assassin who also happens to be a powerful vampire. Instead of killing Edward, Marcus is intent on remaking him into the perfect mate, regardless of Edward's wishes. Slaves do not have power, nor can they give consent, so just be aware of what kind of story this is and either go with it or forget about it.
The pluses here are complex characters and situations mixed with a lot of action. Sure there's all the hot sex and beautiful characters, but the pacing is quick and the plot twists like crazy--so any thought of typical characters and tropes are pushed out of the way. Sigmund Edward Xavier, "Sex," is both engaging and wry as the first person narrator. He knows he was a mess before his kidnapping, and he knows he's still a mess--although a different kind of mess--afterward. But he's still growing as a person, and that makes it all better. We hope he's growing better and stronger, but who knows? Events keep changing and throwing him off his feet. The same goes for his captor, Marcus, which is good, because it's not easy to feel any sympathy for a killer, kidnapper and rapist, no matter how hot and sexy he is! But as I said, things are complex and events keep switching things up for all of them. That the author manages to make monsters more human is definitely a (bizarre) gift, but I enjoy such guilty pleasures.
FYI-- although story arcs are completed somewhat in this book, the tale does continue on, so expect things to have open ends at this point. I can't wait to read the next books in this series.

A Wonderful Epic Yaoi Romance, Especially if You Love Dark Yaoi and Gay Vampires
By X. Ethan Smith
So Derekica Snake (aka kiix) was actually the first author I read on AFF and her stories were some of my first true experiences with slash/yaoi fiction and I've been hooked ever since. However, Snake definitely writes darker stories so if you like your yaoi with more blood and BDSM while generally retaining most of the generic yaoi and M/M archetypes within an exciting and complex plot, then you'll likely love this series. This brings me to my next point which is that Snake writes epically (which is one of the reasons that I love her writing, b/c too many M/M romances are just snippets of sex, whereas I like to have a plot, thank you very much!) and this book is only the first half of the original first story, and she has a total of 6 of these stories on AFF--# 6 is still WIP--so that's likely at least 12 of these books. So, be aware that if you go into the long-haul on this series (which I think you will), then you're going to be paying a LOT b/c, although I commend SL Publishing for taking on Snake's works (and uses the artist, feimo as the cover artist--superb cover work, btw!), they also use the ridiculously large font and spacious page layout that most M/M romance publishers use which I assume is there to make the page count higher and thus more appealing to some readers. But really, for this series it seems rather strange to do so (and I know books published at lulu that are the length of the original draft of Cake can be published with smaller font and a more space-filling way--like any regular 500 page book--that are perfectly readable).
Also, although I love this series to death (pun, lol), there are some nitpicky complaints to voice. One is the fact that Snake's writing can get a little confusing at times. This I found mostly later on in this series (which admittedly are first drafts) w/ randomly starting a chapter in the present and then flashing back a few days prior and starting from the beginning and go on for multiple chapters, or not explaining things enough (like when Xavier finally tells his parents that he's gay, it's just kind of like 'What!? Wait, oh...OK that's fine,' I mean there's a mixed reaction but it's just sort of glossed over to get to the next plot element; this happens a little too frequently, but then there is a LOT of plot to cover); or just whamming us abruptly with a plot shift. But, once you get used to it it becomes fine and it generally isn't enough to detract from the overall (and rather complex) plot. In the published Cake, it's not too bad but I think I remember a few spots where there were just some clarity issues I think but I then they are resolved later on in the second part of the story (to be published soon as "Cinder"). Also, this series is full of sex and I would daresay perhaps too much of it especially later on when there are so many characters and plot to cover but all the horny vampires have to stop and have sex with their own partners before we can move along. With the epic-ness of the series the sex can get rather annoying at times but it also drives the plot in most cases. Even then, though, the sex isn't really that 'good,' most of the time and is often short and sometimes rather repetitive. Still, this is being nitpicky and one really should be reading this story for the characters and plot anyway b/c they are what makes it shine.
Also, although this story is written with characters who are obviously drawn from yaoi archetypes, the writing style seems much more along the lines of typical M/M dark fantasy action romances. So, to me although you are reading a yaoi romance it didn't really feel that way until you got to the typical strong-dark seme/weepy-'naive'-sweetheart-ish uke characters or the creepy prettyboys (which basically everybody is). But these are just broad generalizations b/c the characters are extremely complex (especially later in the series when there many more central characters) and often break out of their yaoi archetype shells--usually owing to emotional, magical and physical distress. It is just too difficult to really explain the series since it is so epic and only this first book has been published thus far (so it is even more difficult to give a plot summary of this book w/o giving spoilers of latter parts of the series). But if you like yaoi, chances are you probably also enjoy M/M romance and so this book is a fine combination of both. Then, for the darker elements, if you enjoy yaoi/M/M with bondage, blood, violence, treachery, action, and some other darker elements along with your emotional turmoil, love naivete, sweet cutesy and tender moments, vampires and other creatures of the night, then I'm sure you'll love this series!
All-in-all I absolutely adore this series and I cannot wait until they are all published! I also have to commend Snake and SL Publishing for giving us more epic M/M-yaoi romances, which are sorely needed!
Also, to add on because of the recent 1-star review, it should be noted that is is still a YAOI ROMANCE. It reads like an M/M romance in tone and such but the characters are basically taken from yaoi archetypes w/ slight modifications like I've said. Yes, this story has weepy ukes (bottoms) and badass-but-kindhearted semes (tops) and yes it romanticizes Stockholm Syndrome and yes the Vampires still have heartbeats...but it is a YAOI ROMANCE and as such the story revolves around the romantic elements between characters the most and 'real' facts can become distorted (like in ANY romance novel, actually). If you love actual Japanese yaoi and especially Americanized versions that tend to go a bit beyond the norm while also retaining much of what yaoi lovers love, then you'll likely love this series too. However, if you're looking for another regular M/M fantasy romance or 'typical' vampire romance (a la the Vampire Chronicles), you'll probably not enjoy this series at all because of the yaoi influences. Still, to rate this book (the weakest in the series, BTW) or the whole series based on the original draft from AFF is very harsh. Does it have its problems, yes, all romances do; does it deserve 1 star and to be called "atrocious," certainly not, especially with half of the real trash in M/M and yaoi that gets published recently. This book and the series definitely hold up against many of their contenders.
PS: The publisher now has this book available for download at half the price...which is probably worth it considering how many more books are to be published in this series.

Pretty good
By Lindsey
I have to say that I put off purchasing this book for a while, since I kept reading reviews that said "this is completely about rape" and "There's no plot!" but I have to admit that it's a pretty good book. Derekica Snake is a pretty good writer, for all that she focuses on smut. And there really is a plot, although things get rushed along pretty quickly and so many things happen so quickly that it's a little unrealistic. (Putting aside the fact that this is about vampires, of course) There are also, I have to admit, a lot of rape scenes, however, as we're seeing it from the victim's (someone who seems to have already developed stockholm syndrome) point of view, it's not as traumatizing as others would have you believe. Plus, later in the story, love becomes heavily involved, so it's not too bad, if you don't mind that sort of thing.
