Please note two different books...

There is some confusion because there are two books with the same title. Bad Girls of the Bible by Barbara Essex is terrific! She uses sound biblical interpretation to help us uncover the "real" story of infamous biblical women. She goes beneath the surface and uses history, archeology and other tools to get at the heart of the women's stories. She doesn't berate them, but helps us see their more positive qualities even though they are being used to move the biblical story forward. This book is fabulous!

GREAT BOOK

I, along with the women from my church, thoroughly enjoyed this book! We learned about women from the Old Testament and gained new insights on familiar ones. We especially appreciated Ms. Essex's "Biblical Interpretative Tools." It was like having a mini seminary class. All of my life I thought that Jezebel was a prostitute or a slut. The term, "You old Jezebel" was the worst term that one could say about a woman. Even though Jezebel was a terribly devious person, Ms. Essex taught us about Jezebel's background and put her story into perspective. We were able to see Jezebel through another lens and discuss how God used her in God's divine plan. The questions in each chapter are also very engaging. I highly recommend this book.

Not Blasphemous, just perspective

Bad Girls of the Bible is a very powerful book. Barbara Essex's writing style is very digestible and easy to read. Her analysis of familiar Bible figures forces the reader to rethink their perception of those people. She dissects 12 very popular and reviled women of the Bible, starting with Eve and ending with Sapphira. Each "Bad Girl" story begins with contextual background of the events surrounding the story. Rev. Essex has an unbelievable grasp of the situations that introduce us to the ladies. If you don't like the conclusions drawn by Essex, it is hard to deny that your understanding of the Bible is improved by this book. The ladies chosen have had pretty "bad" reputations for many, many years. However, some of them have been obvious victims of a male-dominated clergy that has been known to portray women unfavorably. We have heard these stories from preachers in the pulpit for since we were children, without ever questioning them or looking at the scripture. But this book requires you to actually READ the Bible, read the text and go from there.
Rev. Essex makes it a point to humanize each woman and infers some other things that may have been active in the women's lives that led them to this point. Sometimes, she goes out of her way to defend the actions of some (like Herodias), while some we are left wondering about (like the adulterous woman). Certainly, we can all agree that there have been gross mischaracterizations of a lot of women in the Bible. One well known misconception is that of Jezebel. Her name is synonymous with "floozy" or "tramp", but her story is nothing of the kind. She was a queen who was preparing herself for an obvious and predicted death. She was a warrior and defender for her god, Baal. She did the same things to defend her religion as did Elijah, but was on the wrong side of the fight. It's in plain English in the Bible but we all have taken someone else's word for it.
Rev. Essex provides study questions at the end of each section for deeper analysis of each Bad Girl. In my opinion, the best parts of the book were the sections on "Biblical Interpretative Tools" and "Teaching and Preaching Bad Girls of the Bible". The Biblical Interpretative Tools is a very scholarly section that discusses the various traditions and perspectives presented in the Bible. The Elohist, Deuteronomist, Redactor, Priestly, and Yahwist traditions have their own way of seeing God. This must be understood to really get at the root of why these women were portrayed so badly. It also helps the reader understand other stories in the Bible as well. More importantly, Rev. Essex looks at how feminism, patriarchy, and womanism affect Bible stories. The Teaching and Preaching section was eye-opening because it get the ministers ways of presenting these women in a way that they were not "villains or victims". This section is used to help the readers interact with information and how to share it with others.
My church recently used this book (and Bad Boys of the Bible) for a lengthy Bible study. Our Pastor was had 3 different Bible study sessions every week on these books. We are all more fluent in Bible content, from the lifelong church goer to the new member. We looked at the actual scriptures and had very passionate discussions. We may not have agreed with all that Essex had to say (you shouldn't totally agree with any writer), but we had to re-read the stories to see if we could see what she saw in it. We have grown as a congregation because of these books. It was Rev. Essex's defense of the featured women that made us read the scripture, just to see if we missed anything. At the end of the sessions (Bad Boys was 8 weeks and Bad Girls was 12 weeks), opinions ranged from "I never saw that", "That's not what we learned", or "I never knew that". We liked these books so much that we will begin studying another Essex book, Bad Boys of the New Testament, very soon.
Rev. Barbara Essex has written a book that challenges people's knowledge of the Bible. Many people state that they know the Bible but really have only retained what they have heard or what they have been told by someone else. Because of the conclusions she has drawn to defend these women, we as Christians must revisit these stories and we must be sure we know and understand what the scripture says, not our ministers, evangelists, prophets or anyone else. I encourage any Believer to read this book. I suggest the new Believer read this book with clergy guidance or a study group. I advise the longtime Believer to read this book and examine what they have been taught through the years. I personally have stronger faith after experiencing Bad Girls of the Bible.
