About the Author
Michael Wintle studied at Cambridge and Ghent Universities, and now holds the chair of European History at the University of Amsterdam, where he directs the degree programmes in European Studies. His research interests are in European identity and especially the visual representation of Europe, European industrialization, and the modern history of the Low Countries. He has published widely on Dutch and European history; recent books include An Economic and Social History of the Netherlands (2000); The Idea of a United Europe (2000); Ideas of Europe since 1914 (2002); Image into Identity (2006); and Imagining Europe (2008).

About the Author
William Irwin is professor of Philosophy and Director of the Honors Program at King’s College in Pennsylvania. In addition to publishing in leading scholarly journals such as Philosophy and Literature and The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, Irwin originated the philosophy and popular culture genre of books with Seinfeld and Philosophy in 1999. Irwin has also co-edited The Simpsons and Philosophy and edited The Matrix and Philosophy and Metallica and Philosophy. He is currently the General Editor of the Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture series.

David Kyle Johnson is assistant professor of Philosophy at King’s College in Pennsylvania. In addition to his scholarly work on philosophy of religion, Johnson has edited Heroes and Philosophy and is also a contributor to the Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture series, having written chapters on South Park, Family Guy, The Office, Battlestar Galactica, and Batman. Johnson hosts a podcast on Pop Culture and Philosophy at www.philosophyandpopculture.com.

A dual treat!

This book is self-described as a textbook intended for Philosophy classes in upper schools and universities as a companion to original texts by major philosophers.

The book does an excellent job of summarizing major ideas using popular television shows, books, movies, and music. Additionally, however, I found the study of how philosophy permeates these forms of entertainment and our basic culture to be doubly fascinating.

The book is a compilation of articles, each written by a different author, focusing on a general idea developed in pop culture. One of the best articles I found was about ethics (the concepts of right and wrong). The writer examined the ideas of Utilitarianism by John Stuart Mill (the basic idea that what is good for the most people is always best) and Deontology (the idea that morals are more important for an individual) by Immanuel Kant with an article about superheroes entitled "Why Doesn't Batman Kill the Joker?"

Other highlights include a piece on existence and identity in the movie "The Matrix," an article examining ideas by Nietzche and Marx in Metallica songs, development of a society in "Lost, and an item on destiny and free will in the world of "Harry Potter."

The book does have an emphasis on shows such as "Battlestar Galactica," "The Office," "South Park" and "House." Though I am not as familiar with these programs as with the movies discussed, all of the articles are accessible to the reader with just a slight exposure. The tome also includes articles using "X-Men," "The Colbert Report," "The Terminator," "Twilight," "Heroes," "Watchmen, "Family Guy," and "24."

I found the book a good refresher of many of the basic concepts I learned in a few courses in my past studies. Though not stressed by the authors, a reader with a critical eye may also be able to spot how these philosophical ideas have endured and filter into our daily life activities, including leisure and pop culture.

This is an accessible and enjoyable text book - a great introduction to the world of philosophy. Every library should have a copy. The chapter on The Terminator was fabulous.

Interesting, but Arcane

I like it, but he mixes arcane (probably largely irrelevant) concepts with familiar cultural anchors. South Park, itself, is not probably part of the cultural vernacular in a way that his methods work. A lot of his examples appeal to a particular population (sic-fi, fantasy, etc). It works to show his curiosities, which I appreciate, but, at either end of the spectrum, his examples of culture and philosophy are probably too disparate for the reader to walk away with any coherent connection they could use in a classroom or in a conversation apart from this book.

About the Author

John McPhee was born in Princeton, New Jersey, and was educated at Princeton University and Cambridge University. His writing career began at Time magazine and led to his long association with The New Yorker, where he has been a staff writer since 1965. Also in 1965, he published his first book, A Sense of Where You Are, with Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and in the years since, he has written nearly 30 books, including Oranges (1967), Coming into the Country (1977), The Founding Fish (2002), Uncommon Carriers (2007), and Silk Parachute (2011). Encounters with the Archdruid (1972) and The Curve of Binding Energy (1974) were nominated for National Book Awards in the category of science. McPhee received the Award in Literature from the Academy of Arts and Letters in 1977. In 1999, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Annals of the Former World. He lives in Princeton, New Jersey.

Nature Will Win!

John McPhee, although not a trained Geologist himself, knows more about the subject than 99% of the lay scientists. He is a fabulous writer with a gift of making esoteric subject matter very readable to the interested layman. Five stars!

McPhee's best.

John McPhee has a knack for translating complex subjects into approachable essays. The Control of Nature reveals his gift better than any other McPhee book (and I've treasured them all).
McPhee's gift for revealing characters exceeds that of all but the best novelists, and he uses these people to tell his stories. Leaving aside the scope and sheer wonder of how humans have attempted to control huge rivers, battle geologic phenomena or attempt to do nothing less than fight entropy - the human intervention McPhee describes are equal parts brilliance and hubris - you'll marvel at this book as much for its storytelling brilliance and artful construction as for its subject matter.
There are only three writers I ever wanted to meet. Two are dead (Mark Twain, Joseph Mitchell). Maybe I'll luck out some day and meet McPhee. I have no questions for him - I only want to say thanks.

Minimize legal difficulties

As President & CEO of the Texas Hotel and Motel Association, I have known Stephen Barth as a revered professor of hospitality law at the University of Houston's Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, as a tremendously popular seminar leader, and now, I am pleased to say, as an outstanding author.
His book, Hospitality Law, provides an up-to-date information source that can teach practicing hospitality managers and students how to avoid and minimize legal difficulties they might otherwise face in the running of lodging properties. The book is well written, easy to follow, and best of all, gives examples from the actual operations of lodging and restaurant establishments. Especially strong are the sections on contract law, safety and security, and employment issues.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the legal issues that arise in the everyday decisions that a lodging property professional must make.

This book helpes me to be prepared for some potential legal matters that I may have to face in a complicated casino hotel environment. Very pleased!

I just got this book 2 days ago and already I love it. The songs are easy enough that it won't take me weeks to learn them - a big plus. But the arrangements are put together so well and sound really beautiful. The book is labeled as a "medium-difficult" level, but I would classify it as slightly easier than that. I also bought Chris Rice - The Living Room Sessions which is labeled the same and it appears to be a bit more difficult than this book. All the same, I know I am really going to enjoy playing from this one!

A very nice, intermediate level, solo piano music book. Each arrangement is 3 minutes or less long. Very nice arrangements of familiar carols.

Best solo piano Christmas book that money can buy!

I can't wait for Christmas to roll around each year so I can pull out this book and start playing preludes for church from it. Unless you're a total beginner, this book is fantastic. It's easy enough for intermediate pianists to be able to play pieces from it with a couple of practice sessions, and advanced pianists can just sit down and play from it. Simple and sight-readable, but you'd never be able to tell that from the way it sounds. This is a must for any pianist's collection!
