Richard L. Nostrand interprets the Hispanos’ experience in geographical terms. He demonstrates that their unique intermixture with Pueblo Indians, nomad Indians, Anglos, and Mexican Americans, combined with isolation in their particular natural and cultural environments, have given them a unique sense of place - a sense of homeland.

Several processes shaped and reshaped the Hispano Homeland. Initial colonization left the Hispanos relatively isolated from cultural changes in the rest of New Spain, and gradual intermarriage with Pueblo and nomad Indians gave them new cultural features. As their numbers increased in the eighteenth century, they began to expand their Stronghold outward from the original colonies.

Richard L. Nostrand is David Ross Boyd Professor of Geography at the University of Oklahoma. His book The Hispano Homeland was awarded the Angie Debo Prize for the most distinguished book on the American Southwest published by the University of Oklahoma Press and was named an Outstanding Academic Book by CHOICE: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries.

An excellent resource on the New Mexico "Hispano"

An excellent resource on the New Mexico "Hispano". My parents immigrated from Spain in the early 1900's and settled in Vacaville, California, a town in Northern California founded by a New Mexico "Hispano", Juan Manuel Baca that is covered in Nostrand's book. I have spent some time in Trinidad, Colorado, and met several "Hispanos" and discovered that it was easy to relate to the locals, as if we had something in common. It makes me wonder if their was any connection between the Spanish Immigrants who settled in Vacaville in the early 1900's with the New Mexico "Hispanos". Probably not, but it's an interesting theory.

Reviewer: A reader from Southern Colorado - Northern New Mexico. An excellent aid for those of us researching our family roots in New Mexico. This book does much to explain and date the migration of our Hispanic/Indian ancestors in and from the Rio Grande Valley during the past 400 years.

Excellent depiction of the Hispano subculture

In this book Nostrand describes the cultural geography and history of the "Hispano homeland" -- a region in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado with a distinct and interesting history and culture. He also traces the connections between this region and outside influences, from the early Spanish settlers, to the Pueblo Indians and Anglos, to relations with other Mexican Americans in the U.S. today. This book is useful in understanding borderland influences further away from the more often represented U.S./Mexico border. Covering over 400 years of history, it shows how border influences change and last through time. It's well written, extremely thorough with good maps tracing "intrusions" of other cultures into the region, and good tabular information, too. I found this book invaluable for my own work in northern New Mexico, but this book may also be useful for those interested in rural development, community studies, and sense of place, as Nostrand articulates well what the Hispano Homeland means to the people who live there and why it becomes necessary for some to leave. It is a good complement to Carlos Velez-Ibanez' Border Visions, which is less geographically based and focuses more on cultural place closer to the U.S. - Mexico border.

Before coming an author of fiction in the early 1960’s, John Gardner was variously a stage magician, a Royal Marine officer and a journalist. In all Gardner has fifty-four novels to his credit, including ‘Maestro’, which was the New York Times book of the year. He was also invited by Ian Fleming’s literary copyright holders to write a series of continuation James Bond novels, which proved to be so successful that instead of the contracted three books he went on to publish some fourteen titles, including ‘Licence Renewed’ and ‘Icebreaker’. Having lived in the Republic of Ireland, the United States and the UK, John Gardner sadly died in August of 2007 having just completed his third novel in the Moriarty trilogy, Conan Doyle’s eponymous villain of the Sherlock Holmes series.

Fine atmospherics partly redeem a shaky plot in Gardner's second entry in his Suzie Mountford series (after 2002's Bottled Spider), set in WWII London. Det. Sergeant Mountford seeks to advance her career by tackling gangsters who have supplemented their usual rackets with a variety of black market swindles aimed at dulling the pain of government-mandated rationing. In order to nail a corrupt superior she suspects of working hand in glove with the most vicious and powerful villains-twins who seem to foreshadow the historic brothers Kray-she fakes a breakup with her aristocratic lover to arrange a reassignment to Soho. Once in position, she diligently enlists a network of informants to probe for any chinks in the twins' armor and plots to seize any opportunity to find a witness willing to testify to their brutalities. In the background, a necrophiliac serial killer, the Ghoul, preys on victims of the intermittent German bombing runs. Unfortunately, the Ghoul flies so far below the radar that neither Mountford or any of her colleagues in the force are aware that he is even at work until the story's end, where several key strands of the book unravel. Most notably, the street-smart and independent Mountford becomes a passive victim not once but twice, in ways that seem only gratuitous. These flaws mar a decent police thriller that makes little pretense to having any mystery elements, but that nicely evokes wartime London and the seamy underworld that thrived amid patriotic sacrifice.

John Gardner began his boatbuilding career in 1940 at Graves Boatyard in Marblehead, Massachusetts. This book should be better known.

I am amazed and honored to be the first to review "The Streets of Town" by John Gardner for Amazon. I'm amazed as this series of books, that began with "Bottled Spider", should have been at the top of any list of mysteries and thrillers. I feel honored as I consider John Gardner the very top in his field.

"The Streets of Town" follows the further adventures of Scotland Yard's WDS Suzie Mountford. Again the author gives us beautifully detailed plotting with sub plots galore. There are more surprises than a Hitchcock film and the characterizations are supreme. In this adventure we have a unique picture of the London underworld with the back drop of World War Two in 1941. The description and the dialogue of criminal characters is more colorful than a Damon Runyan tale and definitely more grim and deadly. Suzie has to overcome the prejudice against women who took the place of men as police officers during the war and therefore has to out Sherlock other detectives using her own unique abilities.

If this is your first look at the series you will want to read "Bottled Spider" and the two (three before long) that follow this one. If you have never read any books by John Gardner, then now is the time to start as you have missed a great deal.

I will admit that the Suzie Mountford books may appear at first glance as being geared to an English readership, something that may be new to some American readers. However, that is one of the things that makes this series so distinctive and you will find that the vernacular, some of the the terms, can be sorted out when you consider the whole text and you use your imgaination. John Gardner wants us to feel the texture of the times in London, to understand what life was like in this city at this particular period of history.

Exceptionall book

The late John Gardner, a writer of long and distinguished career, finished his exceptionall opus with the series of 5 novels featuring Det. Sgt Suzie Mountford, set in wartime London.
The first two books that I've read are real gems. The tantalizing atmosphere of foggy, wounded London, the flesh and blood characters that almost leap at us from the pages, the wicked sense of humor-it is all perfect. Mr. Gardner gives a whole new spin on wartime London. It wasn't just the amazing courage and sacrifice of the British people. There was a lot of money to be made, gangsters, hookers, booze and if you had the dough you could buy anything you dreamt of. That slimy, violent London and its heros and villains, make you grieve when the book is finished. I have three more books left, and I will relish them slowly and sparingly.

A Guide Back to Good Mental Health and Emotions

It was recommended to me to read this book, so I ordered it right away. I could only read one chapter a day because I truly was struggling with situations in my life and this book helped me to get through those struggles. By the time I got to chapter 5, I had to start "journaling" somewhat... by writing down questions, feelings & emotions that were very raw for me. After I finished chapter 14 I had to take a break, so a week went by. I began to read Chapter 15 titled "Fair or Life?" and on the top of page 86 that sentence hit me like a brick wall. I read it over and over again to the point of meditating on it. I no longer had to journal; I just read. And I finished the book (22 chapters in all, with a wrap-up at the end) in three more days.

My anger has subsided... hopefully gone for good. I have learned how to manage my feelings & emotions, many of my questions were answered. I will re-read this book again in the near future to make sure that I understood that anger is an emotion that needs to be given over time and time again to God, to understanding, to realization... anger only kills me.

I have ordered many more books to give them away to family members & friends who I know will benefit from reading it. I also got one for my local library, since I know they do not have one. Only 150 pages long, but packed with so much.

You don't have an angry problem

I heard about Ray Guarendi on Catholic Answers podcast. Ray Guarendi does a great job of explaining from how people label people who are "quick tempered" to what psychologist say to how to really identify what is making you angry and how it affects you and how to have practical ways to control it. After working for two years, to deal with the angry of a misuse of the judicial system, I found this book very helpful on helping me to identify why I was angry and how to take myself down instead of up.

I have recommended this book to others who are going through things in their lives that generate angry feelings and they need help dealing with it. I will continue to recommend this book!

About the Author
William P. Anthony (PhD) (SPHR) is professor of management, Carl DeSantis Professor of Business Administration, and director of the DeSantis Center for Executive Management Education in the College of Business at Florida State University. He received his MBA and PhD degrees from Ohio State University and his bachelor�s degree from Ohio University. Dr Anthony has published more than 80 articles and 14 books. He has been published in a variety of management journals including Long Range Planning, Human Relations, Academy Of Management Executives, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Dynamics, and Human Resource Management Journal among others. He has served as a reviewer for Human Resource Management Journal and The Journal of Managerial Issues. His book Participative Management, was reprinted 10 times and translated into six different languages. Dr Anthony consults with a wide variety of business and governmental organizations throughout the United States. His previous clients include Motorala, State Farm Insurance, Intervynals Corporation, The U.S. Department of Defense, The Florida Lottery, Rayonier, Resortquest, Olin Corporation, and Goodwill Industries. He also serves as an expert witness in employment matters. Dr Anthony has served as chairman of the management department and as assistant dean in the College Of Business at Florida State University.

K. Michele (Micki) Kacmar (PhD) is professor of management and the Durr-Fillauer Chair of Business Ethics in the department of management and marketing at the University of Alabama. She received her bachelor�s degrees in computer science and communication and a master�s degree in communication from Illinois State University. Her PhD degree is in human resource management from Texas A&M University. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Alabama she served on the faculty at Florida State University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Kacmar teaches courses in ethics at the undergraduate level and research design and methodology at the PhD level. Dr. Kacmar�s general research interests are in the areas of impression management and organizational politics. She has published more than 65 articles in journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Human Relations, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. She served as editor of the Journal of Management from 1999-2002 and as an Associate Editor of Human Resource Management Journal from 1996-1999.

Pamela L. Perrewe (Ph.D.) is the Distinguished Research Professor and Jim Moran Professor of Management in the College of Business at Florida State University. She received her Bachelor degree in Psychology from Purdue University and her Master and Ph.D. degrees in Management from the University of Nebraska. Dr. Perrewe primarily teaches courses in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management and has taught at the undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. levels. Dr. Perrewe is a past recipient of the Florida State University Teaching Excellence Program award and the University Teaching Incentive Program award as well as the University Developing Scholar award. Dr. Perrewe has focused her research interests in the areas of job stress, coping, organizational politics, emotion and personality. Dr. Perrewe has published over 10 book chapters and 70 journal articles in journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Human Relations and Journal of Applied Social Psychology. Further, she has presented 75 research papers at academic and professional meetings. She serves as a member of the Editorial Review Board for Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, Human Resource Management Review, Organizational Analysis, Leadership and Organizational Studies, and Journal of Managerial Issues. She has fellow status with Southern Management Association and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Dr. Perrewe has recently been appointed to the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Finally, she is the co-editor of an annual series entitled, Research in Occupational Stress and Well Being published by Elsevier Science, Inc.
