About the Author

Ian Korf received his B.A. from Cornell University and his Ph.D from Indiana University. His formal training is in molecular biology but he has had a fondness for computer programming since his early teens. His post-doctoral research at Washington University in St. Louis and at The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the U.K. has focused on genomic sequence analysis with an emphasis on comparative genomics and gene prediction.

Very Practical & Useful Users Guide

From a users-perspective this book serves its purpose well - it explains what it is that BLAST is doing "under-the-hood" so that one may better customize Blast's search behavior. All I know is that I really learned a lot of basic fundamental core concepts here that I previously just took for granted.

The book discusses the biology, statistics, algorithms, and computer science issues involved in explaining blast. I liked this approach because it does not head super far into any one core area but rather sticks to a strong fundamental overview of each topic. The other strong aspect of this book is that the author thoroughly compares NCBI and WU Blast throughout, characterizing instances where one may choose one over the other and/or how to tweak the parameters for both in those situations.

I orginally bought the book b/c I wanted an overview on PAM and BLOSUM matrices and to understand how Blast Statistics work. It really served as an informative contextual tutorial that has definitely raised my overall understanding on not only Blast, but to better grasp the very interdisciplinary nature concerning sequence alignment for in-silico biological research.

Useful but poorly written

The book is useful. Knowing BLAST is a must. This is good.

The book is poorly written and organized. The language is vague. Explanations are too short and incomprehensible for a new user. In explaining new concepts authors often use some unknown professional terms and notions, which they never explain. I could guess some terms after reading several times, but too much you have to guess. Some letters in formulas are not explained. Authors should have thought more about their readers.

Maybe this is a book for those who already know the subject, but it claims to be a comprehensive introduction. Also the authors claim that it is a book not for mathematicians. Having a background in statistics I have big problems understanding the material. Maybe that's exactly what they mean by "not for mathematician" - saying some words without adequate definitions?

Fortunately, I didn’t pay much for the book

On p. 85 Hamilton asserts that it is the erosion of inner freedom “that explains the widespread unhappiness and alienation that characterize societies that are otherwise free and wealthy.” I regard that assertion as UTTER NONSENSE!

What Hamilton doesn’t seem to recognize is that humans are BIOLOGICAL creatures, and that, as David P. Barash noted (pp. 318 - 324 of his 1977 Sociobiology and Behavior), during the Agricultural Revolution a “discrepancy” began to develop between (a) the way of life for which humans had become “designed,” and (b) the new ways of life that then began to develop. That is, because our biology remained basically the same (“tortoise”—alluding to his 1988 The Hare and the Tortoise) while changes in way of life (“hare”) were occurring, this created problems for humans. In fact, one could argue that virtually all human problems that developed subsequently were traceable to the “Fall” into agriculture (as Warren Johnson put in his 1979 Muddling Toward Frugality, p. 43).

Using an approach that looks especially to philosophers—Kant and Schopenhauer, in particular—for ideas has led Hamilton to produce a book that has virtually no value.

I will continue to read in the book in the hope that I will find SOMETHING of value in it at some point, but my expectations are extremely LOW—and my copy of the book will be consigned to the recycle box soon. Fortunately, I didn’t pay much for the book!

Douglas E. Richards is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of WIRED and numerous other novels (see list below). A former biotech executive, Richards earned a BS in microbiology from the Ohio State University, a master's degree in genetic engineering from the University of Wisconsin (where he engineered mutant viruses now named after him), and an MBA from the University of Chicago.

In recognition of his work, Richards was selected to be a "special guest" at San Diego Comic-Con International, along with such icons as Stan Lee and Ray Bradbury. Absolutely Amazing - You Must Read this Book

I was blown away by the quality of the writing, the sophistication of the storyline, the depth of the characters, and the break-neck pace of the book. It is once of the best books I have read this summer. With WIRED, I believe that Mr. Richards will give the masters of this genre (mystery/thriller) a run for their money. The book has a little bit for everyone - cutting edge science/science fiction, a bit of philosophy about good vs evil, action galore, and even a little romance. To say the least WIRED is a thriller but it is so much more. If you love mystery/thrillers you must read this book - it is a masterpiece.

Kira, a brillant scientist, has come up with a mechanism to enhance brain functioning and also a mechanism to make immortality a possibility. However, Kira has left a trail of death and destruction in her wake (including parents, teachers, brother, and others). David Desh, formerly in Special Forces, is asked by his former Colonel to find Kira and bring her to justice. In doing so he hires Matt a top notch computer hacker. Before Desh and Matt can get to far, Kira kidnaps them to try to convince them she is innocent and that there is a conspiracy in place to get to her discoveries. Who is telling the truth and who are the good guys/bad guys-you need to read the book to find out.

Writing Style - 4.5/5.0 (Excellent)
Wired is a nicely paced read, starting with a hard-hitting opening scene and good, strong characterisations. The dialogue is considered and flows equally well. From start to finish the whole structure is carefully retained and it was a good, flowing, easy read.

Character Development - 4.0/5.0 (Very Good)
This was a great example of character building in general, though I felt the computer geek character was a little weak and seemed to spend sections of the story where he was actually surplus to requirements. Having said that, he did grow within the storyline he was afforded and fitted well with the other main characters. For the leading lady and leading man of the piece, I thought both were handled exceptionally well and made the story what it was.
The bad guy was cleverly built, and gave me the twist I wanted in the tale.

Descriptive - 4.5/5.0 (Excellent)
The visualisations provided by the author were excellent. Even the thought processes under "enhancement" were very well written, pulling the reader further into the detailed plots and sub-plots.
The locations were very vividly detailed and nicely built also.
I found the few combat-oriented scenes were well placed and used the characters well.

Language & Grammar - 4.0/5.0 (Very Good)
Very good use of general language and grammar made this a nice read. It flowed well and everything tied together nicely.
The delivery of the dialogue was good, though I felt that perhaps one or two of the secondary characters came across as a little wooden. Even so, these were characters we met in passing, and so easy to forget once the plot had moved on.

Plot - 4.5/5.0 (Excellent) - MINOR SPOILERS
I thought the basis of the plot was excellent, and the way the author twisted the characters into the storyline was both clever and inspired, making the depth of the story far more intriguing for the reader. The revelation, when it comes, is almost obvious in afterthought but I must admit, I didn't see it until it was standing over me waving hello.
The ending is carefully plotted and built to provide a `what if' moment, and offers a nice appetiser as to a potential sequel? Certainly not necessary, but what a prospect.

General - 4.0/5.0 (Very Good)
Perhaps fair to pick on a small amount of dialogue and a character I felt a little distant from, but in the grand scheme of things, this was well worth the reading time and easily one of the better works I have picked from my TBR list recently. About half way through, I realised this was the same author who released "The Prometheus Project"children's books. Another example of excellent story-telling.
More than happy to recommend this.

Sentenced to eternal life

Easy-to-read, this is a novel about the use of science in the pursuit of everlasting life. Specifically, it is about modifying the human body to escape aging and the design of society and science to keep the world in the innocent world of sexual immaturity and ignorance, which he author ties to the body's awareness of its own aging and move towards death. His understanding of human biology avoids much of what we understand of the aging process in the various types of cells in the body, arguing that aging is controlled by a small organ located near the brain. Anyone who has taken an elementary college course in human biology would find issues with this premise. Having said that, the author's writing style is engaging and holds the reader's interest to the very end, when the futility of any effort to avoid what is a natural part of living and has value in itself. To be trapped inside a child's body for an entire lifetime isn't an experience I would choose. Discovering another person to love, become one with her in intimacy, participating in the birth of one's own child would all be missed in Richard's fantasy.

A winner for Tara Sivec.

"I have to keep going. If I’m caught, I’ll be dead."

This suspenseful thriller will have you asking questions until the very end. A different venture for Tara, Bury Me was a carefully crafted story with multiple layers, driven by a girl and the prison she calls home.

"Nothing is falling into place and everything feels wrong."

Prepare yourself for a couch date. With the twisting plot lines Tara throws at you there will be no time to "pick it back up tomorrow." Tara has dipped her writing hand into romantic suspense but Bury Me takes her to a completely different level. Leave the penis jokes at the home please because Tara has checked another box off her "can do list" and Bury Me will yet again show her in a whole new light.

Psychological Thriller at its best! I was completely mindblown!

So I did something I don't normally do....I read other people's reviews before writing my own. I needed to make sure that what I was thinking and feeling after finishing this book was even remotely close to others. Needless to say, the resounding words from everyone, including me are:

WHAT IN THE EVER LOVING F#$%@# DID I JUST READ AND WHOSE DEMENTED TWISTED MIND DID THIS COME FROM?!?!?!?

Anyone that has ever read Tara Sivec has come to expect humor. Like rolling on the floor, pee in your pants ridiculous humor. Now, Tara has gone where I never saw coming, the true psychological thriller, the mindf#$% of a rollercoaster, edge of your seat crazy.

"Bury Me" is dark. Black hole dark. The characters are eerie and scary. I read this book beginning to end in a matter of hours because I couldn't put it down. I had no idea where the story was leading. I knew that the parents scared me, stories didn't match up and Ravenna Duskin is a very strange girl. Even as I got to the end and the truth was revealed, I still was completed screwed again when I read the epilogue. "Bury Me" is definitely being added to my list of favorites for a genre I never even knew I loved until recently.

If you have ever had the chance to meet Tara Sivec in person, you've met a legend. Just like the characters in all of her books, she is the funniest, craziest, sweetest most completely batsh#$@#$ crazy person I have ever met. "Bury Me" is that demented side of her, the one we all knew had to be there but she just hadn't discovered it yet. I am seriously glad she did and can't wait to see what personality she reveals next!

About the Author

Burke Johnson is a professor in the Professional Studies Department at the University of South Alabama. His PhD is from the REMS (research, evaluation, measurement, and statistics) program in the College of Education at the University of Georgia. He also has graduate degrees in psychology, sociology, and public administration, which have provided him with a multidisciplinary perspective on research methodology. He was guest editor for a special issue of Research in the Schools focusing on mixed research (available online at www.msera.org/rits_131.htm) and completed a similar guest editorship for the American Behavioral Scientist. He was an associate editor of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research. Burke is first author of Educational Research: Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Approaches (Sage, 2014, 5th edition); second author of Research Methods, Design, and Analysis (Pearson, 2014, 12th edition); coeditor (with Sharlene Hesse-Biber) of The Oxford Handbook of Multimethod and Mixed Methods Research Inquiry (2015); coeditor (with Paul Vogt) of Correlation and Regression Analysis (2012); and associate editor of The SAGE Glossary of the Social and Behavioral Sciences (2009).
 

Larry Christensen (PhD University of Southern Mississippi) is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of South Alabama. Larry is the author of several successful textbooks and has published more than 60 journal articles.

Great book!

I admit- I'm a textbook snob. I truly believe that if we're going to be investing lots of money in books that they better be worth it.

This one is. And it might be the best textbook I've ever had.

I'll be entering a doctoral program this fall and thought I'd use this book as a means to get ahead. What I appreciate is the clarity of writing and the examples (amazing examples) he uses to explain the concepts. I was most concerned about the quantitative /statistics portions but he did a great job of breaking down the material. Overall I'm very glad I bought this book and will be keeping it as a resource.

Spiralling book, online materials

I am taking an introductory class in Educational Research, and this book is GREAT! Although the quality of the book is not the best (it has a hard cover, but the pages are so thin! Thinner than my other textbook pages), the order of the material is easy to understand. The chapters are organized in a manner that spirals back through information, so that by the time you are a third through the textbook, you feel like a master at the material. The online materials that accompany it are fantastic as well, as the practice quizzes have really helped me! The vocabulary cards could be improved, as I am used to using the presentation of Quizlet for online flashcards. The chapter outlines (online) and practice questions really help you understand what is going on (it looks like they were not the final versions uploaded, but they get the job done).
Overall, I like this book, it is more than a paperweight.

Arrived perfect. Had to buy it for class (gave it 5 stars because it seriously says in the book the only reason you're reading this book is because you probably have to) hahahaha! There is so much research jargon in it, which is what it's supposed to be about. The text is nice-sized and the pages are that bright which, semi-glossy paper that I like. Once I'm done with this class, it's going to make an excellent bug smasher.

Diane E. Papalia As a professor, Diane E. Papalia has taught thousands of undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received her bachelor's degree, majoring in psychology, from Vassar College and both her master's degree in child development and family relations and her Ph.D. in life-span developmental psychology from West Virginia University. She has published numerous articles in such professional journals as Human Development, International Journal of Aging and Human Development, Sex Roles, Journal of Experimental Child Psychology and Journal of Gerontology. Most of these papers have dealt with her major research focus, cognitive development from childhood through old age. She is especially interested in intelligence in old age and factors that contribute to the maintenance of intellectual functioning in late adulthood. She is a Fellow in the Gerontological Society of America. She is the coauthor, with Sally Wendkos Olds and Ruth Duskin Feldman, of A Child's World, now in its eighth edition; of Psychology with Sally Wendkos Olds; and of Adult Development and Aging, with Cameron J. Camp and Ruth Duskin Feldman. Sally Wendkos Olds is an award-winning professional writer who has written more than 200 articles in leading magazines and is the author or coauthor of six books addressed to general readers in addition to the three textbooks she has coauthored with Dr. Papalia. Her book The Complete Book of Breastfeeding , a classic since its publication in 1972, was reissued in 1999 in a completely updated and expanded edition; more than 2 million copies are in print. International version is NOT the same

The exercises and case studies are different than the US edition. A lot of teachers will not allow you to use this book in school. Yes, you can buy this book for $17.00 but it is only a great deal if you knew what you were buying. I paid $65.99 for the US version from Harrysbookstore on Ebay. I was thrilled because my school sells this same book for $140.00. You can imagine how angry I was to have this cheap unacceptable version shipped to me. Now I am stuck with it and He will not give me a refund.

Much less expensive than the hardcover

I bought this paperback version and it is EXACTLY the same as the hardcover version with the different picture on the cover but a lot less expensive. My classmates were all amazed at how much money I saved buying the international edition.
