History of ancient Persia - A companion book to a college or university course

"Ancient Persia" is a didactic account of military and political history of ancient Persia from the Achaemenid period up to the Sassanid defeat by the Califfs. The intention of the Author is to approach this often ignored period of ancient history through new or not well known documents, since a great defect of early Persian historiography depends on the almost exclusive use of Greek and Roman documents that depict Achaemenids, Partians and Sassanids as "barbarians" (not the Selgiuchids which were practily Greek!). Unfortunately most of the documents we have on this period are actually Greek or Roman, while the scanty remaining material is archeological. So despite the intentions, this book does not add much to what already found in literature and this is a pity since the Author comes from the best archeological study group on ancient Persia that started with Carsten Niebuhr, passing through Erns Herzfeld to the present days.

History books for lay-persons require a distinctive narrative capacity. The reader often has a birdview culture of the topic but lacks precise references and approaches the text with curiosity and great expectations. Unfortunately, Wiesehofer's "Ancient Persia" is not an engrossing read eventhough it is not difficult or excessively scholastic. The Authors nominates Herodotus, Xenophon, Themistocles, Strabo, Ammiano Marcellinus and others but never explains either who they are or in what period and why they wrote. To fully appreciate the book, the reader must have these references clear and already know at least this part of the story.

The various chapters are a little sketchy and as noted by another reviewer read like essays. This makes me think that maybe they started out as lessons for students or transcriptions of debated issues in an history class.

What makes history live are episodes and anedocts and these are completely lacking in the book, so even if at the end we get a good historical perspective of the topic, little remains in the long run if not reinforced by more information.

However, this is a good reference book to have in case of an introduction to the topic because it does carry a great deal of information. The maps are explicative and the genealogies useful. The bibliography is ample.

Much Overrated

This is not a history of Ancient Persia but rather a set of essays on just a few topics: "The Testimonies" (i.e. the historical sources); "The King and his Subjects"; and "Everyday Life".

Basically, apart from the Behistun relief (text available at avesta.org & Wikipedia) and the Persepolis Texts (R. T. Hallock, Chicago 1969), nearly all the sources are Greek or Latin upon which the author relies despite the contrary assertion given by the publisher on the flyleaf. It's not the ancient Greek and Roman writers that the author attempts to discredit but rather the modern writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Better to read "The Persian Empire" by J. M. Cook or "A Political History of the Achaemenid Empire" by Muhammad A. Dandamaev.

Let me start off, for anyone interested purely in Political history and a narrative of history of Ancient Iran, this is not the book your looking for.

What the book does is Give Ancient Iran(Persia) a voice through native sources as much as possible.
It utilizes a method to describe Ancient Iran's administrative, cultural, social and religious history.
Josef Weisenhofer first narrates and then comments on Primary sources, in chapters called Testimonies.
In testimonies, he gives more weight to sources closer to the Administration and everyday society.

He has done a Terrific job, It's a must for enthusiasts and students of Ancient Persia or Iran and world history in general.

On March 30, 1282, as the church bells of Palermo were sounding vespers, a crowd of Sicilians fell on a party of French soldiers, the enforcers of Angevin rule over the island. Within minutes the French lay dead. The Palermo revolt spread quickly across Sicily, opposed by Frankish lords and the Italian clergy, and supported by Sicilian commoners, Aragonese infiltrators, and Byzantine spies. Against a complicated multinational backdrop, the noted medieval historian Steven Runciman deftly portrays the tangled world of Mediterranean politics in the 13th century, the apex of the Middle Ages.

Sicilian History Expertly Done

In the early spring of 1282 a great fleet lay at anchor in the harbor of Palermo, Sicily. The commander of the fleet, Charles of Anjou, brother of King (and later Saint) Louis of France, and by the blessing of the Pope and his own political machinations, King of the Two Sicilies, planned to attack the Byzantine capital of Constantinople and re-establish the Latin Empire, with himself as Emperor. For Charles, a man of formidable military and administrative talent, and considerable political ruthlessness, the possibility of being an emperor, of dominating the Mediterranean world, must have seemed so close that he could not fail to grasp the opportunity. And then everything changed.
The Sicilian Vespers, by the late Sir Steven Runciman, is the story of the late 13th century European world that created Charles of Anjou. Runciman describes in considerable, and very interesting detail, the interplay of politics and religion at that time, especially the bare knuckle politicking of the Popes, whose attempts at creating a universal Christendom ruled by the papacy eventually lessened respect not only for the individual popes involved, but for the papacy as an institution as well. The interweaving lines of narrative come together on the evening of March 29th, Easter Monday, of 1282, when a group of drunken Frenchmen arrived outside the Church of the Holy Spirit in Palermo just as the crowd of worshippers was going in for the Vespers service. One of the Frenchmen made advances, or actually tried to rape, a young Sicilian woman. Her outraged husband killed the Frenchman, and when the Frenchmen's friends drew their swords, the crowd jumped them and killed them as well. The oppressed Sicilians then went on a rampage through the streets of Palermo, screaming Moranu il Franchkisi [Death to the French!] and slaughtering every Frenchman they could find, including French priests, nuns, and monks, as well as Sicilian women who had married Frenchmen. The rebellion rapidly spread to other cities across Sicily.
Runciman expertly weaves together the story of what happened and why it happened and what the consequences of the great rebellion were for Charles and the Sicilians and for a papacy more interested in politics than religion. There might be a better book on this subject somewhere, but I tend to doubt it; Runciman writes in clear and understandable English, a talent not usually cultivated by academic historians in the United States, and he knows his subject backwards and forwards. I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in the Middle Ages, and to anyone interested in how history ought to be written.

Byzantine diplomacy was the best in the world...

Sir Steven Runciman was one of the leading scholars of the Middle Ages. He also had a profound understanding of diplomacy and warfare. He is not only the author of this book, but also several books on the Crusades and Byzantium. However, this I feel is his best book. First of all it is a wonderful story. This is how the Byzantine empire managed with no army, no navy, very little money, but with a great deal of diplomacy and intelligence to prevent a planned invasion from the mightiest power in 100 years. This book should be required reading for all statesmen, would be statesmen, and military planners. Well researched, well written piece of scholastic history

I was pleasantly surprised to find this a well-informed piece of modern historical anayalsis of the later thirteenth Mediterranean history. The book focuses primarily on the careers of both Manfred and Charles and their struggle to maintain an outdated concept of ancient imperialism. More than anything this book clearly shows the final transistions from an autocratical imperial Europe to a papal-dominated fractured set of European vassal states.
It is interesting for its succinct prose and deliberate factual outlay. Rather than seeking to impress upon his own ideas, Runciman deliberately tells us the history from a Latin perspective without impression of telling a story with all its propagandistic baggage. Don't be fooled by the usual publisher gumph on the back. The incident in Palermo in 1282 is used as a focal point for the history rather than being the main point of discussion and the work succeeds all the more for it.
A hugely impressive piece of scholastic history and, I would think, a vital book for any serious student of thirteenth century Mediterranean history.

I buy extra copies to loan to my colleagues

This book is a great starting place for new system administrators, and also contains valuable information and ways to think about problems for senior system administrators. I own the first edition, and the third edition is full of more new things, but equally accessible and easy to read. Start with any chapter and you can learn something useful, or read it front to back for a wholistic view. I am the interrupt sponge (see p10) for my team, but I use this book as a resource for teaching and mentoring.

This is an amazing book and was very excited to see this new edition come up. I work in the IT field and wear many hats and this book provides me with guidance to be successful in all areas in IT from service desk to Infrastructure to Web services. IT can be a rough spot for many but this book really sheds some great insight, practical tools, and positive ideas to get through not only through the technical facets, but also what I feel were left out from the OSI model - Layer 8 the political layer. I admire these authors and the experiences they have shared in this book. Kudos to them and I hope they continue to share more in future editions to come.

Amazon.com: What inspired you to start taking pictures?

Marent: I used to be a birdwatcher in Switzerland--and soon I was also interested in amphibians, insects, and plants. After a while I thought it would be nice to have pictures of all these beautiful animals.

Amazon.com: Waiting for the perfect shot takes patience and time. How do you decide what images are worth waiting for?

Marent: I mostly focus on the colorful and spectacularly shaped creatures. Sometimes it is a matter of luck to find them, but sometimes I have to know where and when to look for them.

Marent: I don't have one favorite--there are many favorites! I especially like the photos of frogs, butterflies, fungi, birds and weird insects.

Marent: When people think of the rainforest, it's the monkeys, birds, and wild cats that first come to mind. But there are so many small and beautiful creatures. We need to see and appreciate them too--they're just a little harder to find! Many of these smaller creatures have never been seen by most people.

Marent: With the book I want to show to the people the endless beauty of the rainforests. I do hope that it might open the eyes of some people, so that they'll agree that it's worth protecting this fantastic environment.

Marent: Some of my favorites always were frogs and butterflies, but birds and monkeys as well. And of course the weird-looking insects.

Marent: In Asia it is Borneo. In Africa it is Madagascar. In Latin America it is Costa Rica and Peru/Colombia. But I also like the Australian and New Zealand rainforests.

Marent: A tripod is an absolutely must. Try to move to the animals slowly and quietly--it takes some patience. Whenever possible try taking your pictures at the animal's eye level. And it's always important to think about the background when you compose the picture.

A true gem

This book is one of the most spectacular collections of nature photography I have ever seen. The author spent 16 years traveling across the tropics, capturing with his camera the very essence of the rainforest ecosystem. Ranging from majestic panoramas of the forest to intimate portraits of birds and mammals (how did he get those wide angle portraits of monkeys?!) to fantastic close ups of invertebrates and mushrooms, this book explores tropical humid forest at all its levels. The message of this magnificent collection is clear - rainforests are the pinnacle of life on Earth, a jewel-studded crown of Nature; they are libraries of genetic and biotic diversity that must be saved at all cost.

I recommend this book to all nature lovers and photography aficionados. I recommend it even more to those who don't care about the rainforest and its preservation - if these images cannot convince you about the value and uniqueness of this habitat, nothing will.

FANTASTIC PHOTOGRAPHY!! AWESOME RAINFORESTS!

This book is AWESOME!!! Every page contains FULL PAGE photographs of the most BEAUTIFUL photography of rainforests (and the creatures that live there) that I have ever seen! The author includes a description of each photograph so you will know what you are looking at. There is also a map showing all the rainforests from all over the world! It made me want to quite my job and go work in the rainforest somewhere, that is, until I saw the picture of the photographer up to his waist in a swamp, covered in mud. He's practically dedicated his life to rainforests. The photography is very inspiring. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book!

Amazing book for parents and children

My [....] son and I stumbled across this book last night and we were absolutely captivated. He is currently studying plants in science and many of the photographs were of plants discussed in class. The photographs mesmerized both of us and we ended up buying the book. I stayed awake to the early morning hours slowly turning the pages as I saw plants and animals in ways I had never before seen.

This morning, my son brought it to school where he shared it with the other kids prior to first bell. There were 15 nine and ten year olds jockeying for the best view with "cool" and "awesome" said only the way a child can. They completely missed the sound of the bell and their teacher came out to see what the delay was. She too fell in love and the book stayed at school to be shared with all the [....] classes over the next few days.

This book deserves more than 5 stars.

About the Author
Lynn Rossy, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist at the University of Missouri’s wellness program for faculty and staff. She developed Eat for Life, a mindfulness-based intuitive eating program that successfully helps people overcome eating issues, improve body image, and enhance weight loss. She is on the board of directors of The Center for Mindful Eating.

Ideal alternative to diet books

This book is exactly what I needed after having my first baby. With the dramatic changes to my body and my hectic schedule, I have developed some negative habits with food (e.g., not eating during the day and then over-eating at night when I finally have time). As a chronic dieter in the past, I did not want to go down the typical diet route. This book did the trick, as it provided me with hands-on, non-diet-focused tools to get a handle on my eating again. From the first chapters, I was given concrete tools to pay attention to what I am eating, to slow down, and focus on my body's cues for what and when to eat. I particularly enjoyed the brief meditation guides and the "what you can do now" points at the end of each chapter. Moreover, Lynn Rossy has a very compassionate voice and I liked that she seemed to understand how challenging it can be to be kind to ourselves when it comes to eating and body issues. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is struggling with their bodies/eating and who want a down-to-earth, holistic, and compassionate alternative to harsh diets programs.

What a wonderful way to learn about mindful eating. Lynn Rossy offers an engaging way to explore the non-dieting, mindful eating concept in a clear, logical and evidence-based way that is sure to remove any doubt you may have about changing your eating. Written with honesty, common sense, and humor, Lynn provides an essential plan that covers the BASICS! And when I say basics, I mean: Breathe, Assess your food, Slow down Investigate your hunger, Chew, & Savor!
Each chapter offers a terrific 2-page summary of the challenge you face, the "good news" and what you can do now!
After reading Lynn's book, I walked over to my family and said, "Read this! It explains mindful eating in a way I think you can finally understand!" It was a privilege to read her work. Lynn is such a fun, wise and authentic person, her brilliance is clearly evident throughout this book!

Just Read It!

Whether your goal is weight loss or to thoroughly enjoy the food you eat, this book is a must read. The author writes in a clear and gentle voice that guides the reader through a simple and effective approach to eating. She supports her approach with plenty of research and her years of experience and training in the field of mindfulness based strategies for health and well-being. I read the book in a day and have found myself eating less and enjoying it more. Don't pass up this delicious gem of a book that shines above others in its class.
