Consistency and Brand Integrity

My personal review of Jim Joseph's newest release, "The Personal Experience Effect: Big Brand Theory Applied to Personal life", the third in the "Experience Effect" series: I have now read all three books in the series - and all have shaped my understanding of Marketing and more specifically, Branding. After nine years of active duty military service, combat deployments and leading Marines it was time for me to enter the world of Corporate America, in the heart of it all - Manhattan. I was lucky enough to know I needed to understand the brand of "I Inc" and I picked up "The Experience Effect" and "The Experience Effect for Small Business" on recommendation - so glad I did! I've been looking forward to "The Personal Experience Effect" ever since.
After reading the first two books in the series, I felt like I had a good handle of the major concepts Jim Joseph would present in "The Personal Experience Effect". For the most part I was correct, which is tough for an author - to maintain interest and attention in a series that discusses similar principals. Jim pulls it off well, and that brings me to the recurring theme of the book: Consistency. I felt the author's consistency through-out the book and series adds value and credibility to his argument that personal branding is largely, if not majorly based on one's ability to consistently convey his brand. Jim also writes very clearly and concisely, making the pages turn quickly and easily without ever pausing to wonder, "What did I just read again?".
There is also an under-lying theme, or hidden twist, in sort of a Disney-movie, or dare I say, Randy Pausch sort of way. A good personal brand depends on Brand Integrity - or as Charles L. Allen would say in "Why Good People Make Bad Choices", consistent decisions build integrity. This is a value that extends beyond building a brand - but for building a strong person of value. Joseph describes Marketers as "good decision makers"; good decision makers make consistent decisions; consistent decisions build brand integrity - brand integrity displays a person of value.
If you would like my short, more direct, Twitter friendly review, I'll quote my recent Twitter post: "Just finished #thepersonalexperienceeffect by @JimJosephExp 1-line review: Pick it up, do the same!..." I read the book over the course of two work-commutes. I will be referencing the work-sheets and importance of personal branding from the book as I teach a couple of Veteran Transition workshops in the next week - because it applies and is THAT valuable. Jim also seemed to nail it on the head - while my introduction to Jim Joseph was due to my venture to enter the Marketing and Branding world upon exit from the military - I am the "Career Coach" in chapter one, and I DO work in Human Resources.

Made Me Re-Think Myself in Public

This audiobook was interesting to learn about what marketing firms do to promote products, and it wasn't just the fluff. I really learned a lot about marketing (the author does it in a fun way, with lots of pop culture icons used as detailed examples and demonstrations). But then to also learn how to apply that to myself in a practical way was very motivating. At a minimum, this book has made me proactively think about how I present myself to other people in public, especially in a professional environment or networking events. Before I go into an event, I now take a moment to focus on who/what is the EXPERIENCE I am promoting to potential new clients (which the book helped me to clearly define). Now, even if something is going on in my personal life that I am dealing with, I have the power to overcome that when networking, and I can portray the professional best I can be to give the best experience to existing and potential new clients. Basically, the turn-around in my thinking from listening to this book has been this - I think of myself not just as what I can do as a product or service, but what do I offer as an EXPERIENCE that meshes with what clients want, and makes them want to continue and repeatedly want to keep coming back to me. Awesome!
